Statement on the SC Decision on the Burial of former President Marcos in the Libingan ng mga Bayani
November 8, 2016
Today, we seethe in rage with the decision of the Supreme Court.
Marcos, whom we deposed and dishonorably removed from office in 1986, will be given a hero’s burial. Marcos plundered our nation’s coffers. Marcos ordered the imprisonment, torture, and the killing of hundreds of opposition and critics of his administration. Marcos destroyed our democratic system and corrupted our political institutions. MARCOS undermined the professional ethos of the security forces and corrupted the institutions that were supposed to protect and defend our people.
This is a sad day for us, for the victims of the dictatorship, for those who put their lives in the line of fire in defense of democracy, for those who continue to dedicate their lives to protecting our democracy.
We hold the nine (9) Justices accountable. To them whom we have entrusted to uphold not just what is legal, but what is noble and pure – we cry in disgust with what THEY have allowed THEMselves to do.
This is a setback, yes. But we will persevere. Democracy is too important to be left solely in the hands of politicians and justices. We are the people. We have the power. And we will never forget this day.
